My kids also loved Mr. Rogers. Here in Canada we had Mr. Dressup (Ernie Coombs) who had a show that reflected the same kind of values. I always thought these two guys must have been watching each other's shows!
When Mr. Rogers died, I heard an interesting story about them. Apparently Mr. Dressup came from the same city as Mr. Rogers (Philly?). In 1963 they both came to Toronto, Ontario and worked together for a year in the same show, Butternut Square. After that, Mr. Dressup stayed on and the show developed into his Mr. Dressup show. Mr. Rogers returned to America and developed his Neighbourhood. Both shows stayed on the air until their hosts retired.
They were both wonderful shows; full of fun and geared to thinking about things rather than the rapid-fire, intense shows that came later. Mr. Rogers will be missed.
